As the scientific community continues to develop, evaluate, and validate methods for increasingly riskybiological contaminants, the decision to use surrogates needs to be based on the goals of each study, typesof surrogates available (e.g., attenuated strains, other species within the genus), and the identified study-specificfactors. Each study should strike a balance between the science of the method and the risk tolaboratory workers.
