This slide presentation explores four basic questions about water discoloration in the distribution system. The questions include:what is discolored water; how to measure discolored water;what is the cause and nature of discolored water; and, what can we do about it? The presentation defines red water, and outlines a monitoring system for measuring discolored water that includes: a single monitoring system; continuous monitoring of turbidity; results of monitoring turbidity; and, particle related processes in a network. In outlining the causes of discolored water, it covers: particles in the distribution networkresults BTO so far (Starting ~1990); particle counts give detailed information showing thatparticles disappear in the network; treatment is not always as constant,significant particle load during "Incidents"; Stage 1 - hypothesis effect particle load; resuspension potential method; typical RPM curve; ranking RPM; typical RPM resultspre- and post-cleaning: Evaluation tool; Stage 2 - prevent accumulation, cleaning; managing the deposition and resuspention,self cleaning networks; "Zelfreinigend" network; and, Stage 3 - prevent settling, self-cleaningnetwork.
