Full Description

This paper presents a bench-scale study that investigated the potential for humic matter to coat the surface ofbacteria (E. coli and B. subtilis) and consequently offer protection from low-pressure ultraviolet (UV)light. A factorial experiment was completed in which two bacteria (E. coli and B. subtiliscells) and two types of humic matter (Aldrich humic acid (AHA) and Suwannee Rivernatural organic matter (Suwannee River NOM)) were exposed to UV light (5 and 14mJ/cmsup2/sup). The UV light was delivered using a collimated beam apparatus at fourconcentrations of humic matter (0, 10, 50, 120 mg/L) in regent grade water. This studyfollows a recently published paper in which apparent surface-coating of MS2 and T4viruses and subsequent protection from UV disinfection was observed (Templeton et al.,in press).
