In this study, microspheres were found to not be a good surrogate for bacteriophage at the benchscale in testing ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, but adequate in testing microfiltration (MF)membranes with lower microbial rejection. The findings presented here have implications foruse of microspheres as surrogates for other microorganisms. If surface charge and othercharacteristics are not properly considered, microspheres as a surrogate for microorganisms mayyield inconsistent results where the rejection mechanism is by adsorption, adhesion or whereelectrostatic considerations are important, rather than by simple size exclusion. In addition,microsphere detection methods and cost factors were found to limit their suitability as virionsurrogates in water treatment studies. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
