Full Description

Traditional chloramine practice involves the additionof ammonia and chlorine nearly simultaneously, minimizing the presence of free chlorine. However, many drinking water treatment plants are not practicingtraditional chloramination; they now have asignificant period of free chlorine exposure that canaccentuate disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation. This article investigates the effects of treatment, pH,and prechlorination on dihaloacetic acid (Xsub2/subAA)formation kinetics. The data obtained and subsequent conclusionsdrawn provide new insight into Xsub2/subAA formation andcontrol during chloramination to help ensure that chloraminationremains a viable treatment option. Withmany utilities facing a balancing act regarding chlorine, chloramines, and concentration times time requirements,a better understanding of Xsub2/subAA formationkinetics with chloramines is essential input in the complicateddecision-making process of weighing disinfectionrequirements against DBP formation. Includes 37 references, tables, figures.
