One of the most common taste and odor problemsreported by utilities is the presence of an earthy/mustyodor caused by geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol(MIB). This bench-scale study demonstrates thepotential of biofiltration following simulated ozonationas well as biofiltration alone for the removal ofthese compounds under different operational factorsincluding temperature, media type, geosmin and MIBconcentration, and level of biodegradable organicmatter (BOM).Experiments were conducted using four paralleldual media filter columns containing biologicallyactive anthracite or granular activated carbon mediaand sand. Dechlorinated tap water to which geosminand MIB were added was used as the source water.The first round of experiments used a high BOMlevel to simulate water that had been subjected toozonation before filtration. The second round ofexperiments used a low BOM level to simulate nonozonatedwater. Results show that all four main factorswere important to both geosmin and MIBremovals and demonstrate the feasibility with whichbiofiltration may be used to combat these odorouscompounds.
