Bench studies to evaluate adsorption of several organic and inorganic contaminants using iron andmanganese oxide nanoparticles were performed in this study. Unsupported nanopowders, as well asnanoparticles supported by inert media were used in this study. The size of the nanoparticles ranged from 10 to 80 nm, and the specific surface area ranged from 15 to 130 msup2/sup/g of active media. Most of theorganic adsorption studies were performed using commercial humic acid salt. Inorganic constituentsevaluated include arsenic, mercury, lead, copper, perclorate and uranium. Tests were conducted usingsynthetic waters as well as contaminated groundwater. Kinetic studies to identify equilibrium conditions,and isotherm studies to evaluate adsorption capacities were performed. Column studies to evaluateadsorption under dynamic conditions are currently being performed. Total organic carbon (TOC) of samples were analyzedusing UV spectroscopy at 254 nm, and the inorganics were analyzed using ICP, anion-exchange methods. Includes 10 references, figures.
