Natural organic matter (NOM) in water sourcesdiffers in terms of both character and concentration.Water treatment processes and the aestheticquality of water may be influenced by NOM concentrationand character. NOM is also related to nutrientcycling and availability and the general trophic state ofan aquatic ecosystem.Quabbin Reservoir is the primary drinking watersource for metropolitan Boston, Massachusetts. Measures ofNOM present in samples collected from the watershedincluded, but were not limited to, total organiccarbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC),ultraviolet absorbance (UVA), and trihalomethaneformation potential (THMFP). Samples were collectedat the mouths of the 12 major Quabbin tributariesand from a horizontal transect of six sites within thereservoir.A variation was found in the relationships betweenmeasures of NOM from the reservoir and tributarysamples. Regression analyses showed positive linearrelationships between DOC and UVA, THMFP andTOC, and THMFP and UVA. Relationships betweenmeasures of NOM in the reservoir samples wereweaker than those obtained for the tributary samples.These weaker relationships were attributed to the lowconcentrations and narrow ranges of measures ofNOM in the reservoir and the overall complexity of theaquatic system.
