Full Description

The Wasserwerk des Kreises Aachen in Roetgen, Germany operates, with thefinancial assistance of the German Ministry for Education and Research and withscientific support from the IWW in Mulheim, Germany, a large scale membrane pilotplant. This plant is equipped with twelve 6 m-long pressure vessels resulting ina membrane area of about 1620 m2 which produces about 150 m3/hour of filtrate. The pilot plant was operated first with flocculated reservoir water as the feed. The results show that this is a reasonable process especially if the backflushwater from the plant is further treated at another membrane plant to achievehigh overall recoveries of up to 99%. Monitoring of membrane integrity is animportant aspect of this research. Every pressure vessel at the pilot plant canbe connected to a particle counter by switching magnetic valves automatically.Corrupted fibers were detected by particle counting after about 8 months ofoperation. A correlation between the number of broken fibers and particleconcentration in the filtrate could not be established and may not exist as isdiscussed in this paper. Includes 8 references, figures.
