The Central Arizona Water Conservation District (CAWCD) operates and maintains a series of aqueducts from Lake Havasu on the Colorado River, which flows through Phoenix and terminates south of Tucson. The Hayden-Rhodes Aqueduct conveys water 191 miles to Phoenix. From there, the Fannin-McFarland Aqueduct spans 58 miles to the beginning of the Tucson Aqueduct, which stretches 87 miles to the terminus. CAWCD uses a new supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor and control all features of the aqueducts from an operations center located north of Phoenix. The new SCADA replaces the original system and greatly enhances monitoring and controlling capabilities. This paper describes the project approach, the new SCADA system's capabilities and discusses lessons learned during this highly technical 3 year project. Includes figures.
