Full Description

Taste and odor problems had plagued the Louisville Water Company (LWC)of Louisville, Kentucky, from August to October 1999. Both geosmin and 2-methyisoborneol (MIB), frequently responsible for musty and earthy odors, were detected in the Ohio River. MIB and geosmin levels varied throughout the incident. Unusual levels of MIB were recorded in the initial phase of the incident. This paper discusses the detection and monitoring of the taste and odor compounds and presents methods for effective removal of MIB and geosmin. Includes 2 references, figures.
