New regulations were brought into United Kingdom law in 1999 requiring all watercompanies to categorize their sources of public water supply with regard to therisk of failing a new treatment standard of Cryptosporidium. During 1999 and2000, Thames Water personnel worked on the extensive implications of theseregulations, to enable compliance with the statutory sampling and analyticalrequirements, to review issues of process capability and operation, operatortraining and competence, and to create a detailed set of contingency plans shouldthey be needed. This work has increased Thames Water's technical capability aswell as its standing with the regulator, and has made it better placed tocompete for new business.
