In the US, approximately 30% of wastewater pipe rehabilitation is currentlyachieved by trenchless methods and in the United Kingdom some water utilities usethese techniques to achieve 60% or more of their water main rehabilitationtargets. Yet despite the obvious benefits of decreased disruption and lowercosts, the rate of adoption of trenchless technologies in the US has been slow.This paper provides a detailed review of trenchless technologies and their use inthe United States and the United Kingdom. Design, specification and liningselection issues are addressed including design for internal pressure andexternal loads. Lessons learned from the British experience in water mainsrenovation are summarized. Includes 16 references, tables, figures.
