This paper examined the products of the reactions between monochloramine and ferrous iron or monochloramine and natural organic matter (NOM) to determine the relationship between monochloramine loss and the formation of ammonia or other products. A careful examination of reaction products can be of use in characterizing the mechanisms by which monochloramine decays. Chlorine and nitrogen mass balances attempt to account for all known monochloramine decay products, while redox balances try to account for all known oxidation and reduction products. This technique was previously used to study the reactions between monochloramine products. This technique was previously used to study the reactions between monochloramine and NOM, and in this paper its use is extended to the reactions which occur between monochloramine and ferrous iron. Prior research has shown that monochloramine and ferrous iron readily react, however the reaction is quite complex. In this paper, mass and redox balances are utilized to gain insight into the complexities of this system. The results obtained for the NH2Cl-Fe(II) system are then compared with those obtained previously for the NH2Cl-NOM system.
