Full Description

The use of microfiltration as a means for treating waste filter backwash water was investigated. During a pilot study, three membrane units from different manufacturers were evaluated. The results from this testing indicated that these units produced water low in turbidity (<0.1 ntu), color (<5 scu), and could remove at least 4-log of pathogens. Based on these results, a treatment scheme is envisioned whereby the backwash water is treated by microfiltration and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection (as a secondary barrier) prior to being discharged to the plant clearwell, thereby eliminating a recycle stream. A conceptual cost analysis indicated that by removing the recycle stream from the main process flow, some of the cost of the membrane/UV system could be recouped through lower concrete costs for the main treatment process.
