This paper reviews biological water treatment processes for the removal of iron, ammonium, and manganese. The paper discusses the experience of the SAUR Group of Companies, at Saints Hill, West Kent, England, the first biological water treatment plant in the United Kingdom. The two pilot units currently under way in the State of Washington are also discussed. And finally the paper provides information on the process and economic advantages and disadvantages of biological water treatment processes to make regulators, utilities, and engineers aware of this option when considering treatment process options.
