The KNR Process (Catalytic Nitrate Reduction) is the only process to propose a 100% waste-free solution for nitrate removal from water. The innovative technology of this process is based on the use of particle shaped heterogeneous catalysis which, with the aid of hydrogen, convert the nitrates in solution to natural nitrogen and thereby eliminate them from the water. These catalysts consist of a water resistant carrier material which is coated with active palladium and copper components. Following the results of initial laboratory tests, an industrial trial was carried out at the Braunschweig-Lamme water works. This paper begins with a discussion of the science behind the process, including the catalytic nitrate reduction, principles of gas transport into water across a dense membrane. Next the author describes the experimental work, including the pilot plant, hollow fiber membrane module, nitrate reduction experiments, and hydrogen saturation experiments. The trials show that the KNR process can be adapted for industrial use.
