This paper describes a joint effort by the Electric Power Research Institute and the AWWA Research Foundation to incorporate open systems architecture into the EPRI's Utility Communication Architecture standards. These standards allow software to be used among various types of hardware and to be integrated with other types of software. This technical discussion focuses on open systems, EPRI's UCA standards, and the development of similar standards for the water industry.
