The research presented in this paper concludes the following: 1) In agreement with other researchers the membrane material is a strong factor in the fouling of the membrane. A hydrophobic membrane will foul to a much greater extent relative to a hydrophilic one. 2) Different types of organic materials in water will have different effects on irreversible membrane fouling. 3) The pH and ionic strength (I) of a feed water can influence its flux through a membrane. For the charged molecules under conditions which result in expanded conformations the solution fluxes are greater than when the molecules are more compact. 4) The condition which results in the greatest irreversible flux decline may not be the same as that at which the lowest solution flux occurs. For the natural organic matter the conditions resulting in the lowest solution fluxes did not give the worst amount of fouling.
