Full Description

Even though polymeric nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes oftenoperate on surface waters and surficial groundwaters whose temperature varies over time andwith season, very little detailed mechanistic information on temperature effects on membraneselectivity is available to date. Hence, a study was undertaken to investigate the effects ofoperating temperature (5 - 41C) on the morphology and structure of two commercially availablethin film composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes. This paper presents recentlypublished results from this study on the influence of temperature on the membranes' activelayers. Results include quantitative information on the structure and morphology includingpore size distributions, pore connectivity, and pore number density as well as effectivemembrane charge density. Apparent activation energy associated with hindered transport ofwater and neutral solutes of different molecular dimensions will also be reported. Includes 50 references.
